In Lewis Mumford’s The Myth of the Machine, I found his perspective on technology both interesting and relevant to today’s society. Mumford argues that technology is not always a positive force, especially when people allow machines and systems to control human life rather than improve it. After reading this, I realized that I fall somewhere between being a skeptic and an optimist when it comes to technology. I believe technology can make life easier and more efficient, but I also think society depends on it too heavily at times.

 

One idea from Mumford that stood out to me was his discussion about how large systems and organizations can reduce individuality. In modern society, many people rely on phones, computers, and artificial intelligence for everyday tasks. While these tools save time, they can also reduce face-to-face interaction and independent thinking. As someone who works in maintenance and has military experience, I understand the importance of technology in improving communication, repairs, and efficiency. However, I also know there are situations where human judgment, experience, and teamwork are more valuable than technology alone.

 

Mumford’s reading made me think about how technology affects my own daily life. I use technology often for school, work, and communication, but I try not to let it completely control my decisions or interactions with others. I think having a balanced perspective is important. Technology should support human growth and creativity instead of replacing it.

 

Overall, The Myth of the Machine encourages readers to think critically about how much power society gives to technology. I believe Mumford’s message is still important today because technology continues to grow rapidly, especially with artificial intelligence becoming more common in everyday life.
